Modification as Queer Identity

This project continues my long-term commitment to photographing LGBTQIA+ lives.

Most coverage of tattoos and piercings treats them as culture or trend: styles, artists, the scene. That’s not what I’m interested in. For a lot of LGBTQ+ people, modifying the body is something else entirely, a way of marking a transition, standing in for something lost, or taking back a body that wasn’t always theirs to shape in the first place. That personal story is one I want to tell.

For over thirty years, my work has centred on visibility, authorship and who gets to be seen.

Beyond the Binary – A Celebration of Trans Joy,
and UNCUT – A Celebration of Queer Joy.
Each explored queer presence at moments where it was ignored, misunderstood, or simplified.
