An artist-led not-for-profit initiative creating and supporting collaborative socially engaged projects with LGBTQ+ people and marginalised communities.

ABOUT US

We're based in Brighton & Hove, but the work travels further than that. Through free exhibitions, workshops and cultural events across Sussex and the South East, and online, we bring people together – building real connections and making space for creative collaboration. Proud Studios CIC is a non-profit founded by award-winning photographer Chris Jepson, who has spent 30+ years documenting LGBTQIA+ lives, communities and culture.

OUR MISSION

We make creative projects with LGBTQ+ people and marginalised communities – work that's honest, visible and made together. Photography and art can do something that statistics and reports can't: they put a face and a story to lived experience. That's what drives everything we do. We want people to see themselves reflected, and to feel like this space is for them.

New Project

Queer Elders are the living record of our community.
This project continues my long-term commitment to photographing LGBTQIA+ lives.

This is not a project about age. Elder is not a number on a birth certificate. It is about what someone has carried, what they have survived, and what they know because of it.

A collab with the Trans at Google employee resource group, there are 14 x A2 prints with accompanying text on display at Google UK Kings Cross and Google UK St Giles High St as the ERG Summer Series exhibition for the whole of July.
If you work there or are visiting someone at Google, please do stop by and read the stories of these amazing people.

The Identity Project

IDENTITY is a project by award-winning British photographer Chris Jepson, exploring what it means to identify as a member of the LGBTQ+ community today.

Gay Liberation

Gay Liberation

To mark 50 years since the first ‘Brighton Gay Pride march’ in July 1973, ‘Gay Liberation’ presents new portraits of veterans of the London GLF and the Sussex GLF, each a poignant testament to the personal narratives of the veterans, reflecting the trials they encountered while navigating the path to acceptance and liberation.

10 Years Of Trans Joy

10 Years Of Trans Joy

Celebrating the 10th anniversary of Trans Pride Brighton, last year (2023) Sharon Kilgannon held a short exhibition of her project ’10 Years Of Trans Joy’. We thought the work deserved a wider audience and a more permanent home, so are delighted to present these amazing images.

Adventures in Clubland

Adventures in Clubland

Step inside three decades of nightlife, identity and celebration.
Chris Jepson has been documenting LGBTQ+ club culture for over 30 years. From the mid 90s to the present day, the underground sweatboxes of Soho to global Pride stages, Jepson is the go-to guy trusted by numerous promoters and publications to capture the spirit of queer clubbing. His lens documents raw joy, fierce looks, intimate moments and the vibrant energy of queer nightlife around the world.

Chris Jepson Archive

The director and founder of Proud Studios CIC, Chris Jepson, has worked on the LGBTQ+ scene for more than 30 years. We are delighted that we are the official home of his extensive archive and gradually collections will be added as they are catalogued, curated and digitised.
