Photographed in Stranmer woods, Brighton,
Persia, a trans woman from Liverpool, shared her journey from childhood bullying to spiritual realisation in Spain in 1970, leading to 55 years of meditation. She discussed her travels, including living in Japan and California, and her transition in the 1990s. Persia highlighted her activism in Brighton, including diversity training and founding the Metropolitan Police’s transgender group. She expressed hope for future generations, noting the normalisation of trans people in society. Persia also plans to start a podcast, “We Are Far More Than Our Bodies,” to challenge societal narratives and promote understanding.
Queer Elders are the living record of LGBTQIA+ life.
This project continues my long-term commitment to photographing LGBTQIA+ lives.
For over thirty years, my work has centred on visibility, authorship and who gets to be seen.
