In a world that often struggles to fully embrace diversity and inclusion, ‘Beyond The Binary – A Celebration Of Trans Joy’ is a project dedicated to fostering social cohesion and visibility for the trans and intersex community. This fresh initiative from the award-winning queer photographer Chris Jepson seeks to empower and celebrate the trans+ community by showcasing authentic joy through a captivating series of individual and group portraits.

In the realm of social justice and equality, representation matters. Building on the themes of Jepson’s previous Identity Project, ‘Beyond the Binary’ from Proud Studios aims to go beyond the confines of stereotypes and misconceptions by highlighting the resilience, beauty, and sheer happiness within the trans+ community. By collaborating with local trans+ groups and individuals in the creation process and enabling them to tell their stories, the project aspires to provide a platform for self-expression, breaking down barriers and challenging preconceived notions.

At the heart of ‘Beyond the Binary’ lies the belief that true understanding and acceptance can be achieved through shared narratives and genuine connections. The power of visual storytelling through portraits becomes a medium for the trans+ community to reclaim their narratives, providing a nuanced and multifaceted perspective that transcends societal expectations.

Through collaboration, empathy, and the art of photography, ‘Beyond the Binary’ seeks to bridge divides and create an atmosphere where Trans+ Joy is not only acknowledged but celebrated. By showcasing the diversity of experiences within the community, the project aims to inspire conversations that foster understanding, empathy, and support.

‘Beyond The Binary – A Celebration Of Trans Joy’ is not just a portrait project; it’s a movement towards building a more inclusive society where every individual is seen, heard, and valued for who they truly are.

Join us in recording and spreading the captivating joy that transcends gender boundaries, creating a world where the trans community is recognised, celebrated, and embraced without reservation.

About Trans+ History Week

Trans+ History Week is a week-long reflective period to learn and celebrate the momentous and millennia-old history of transgender, non-binary, gender-diverse and Intersex people.

It will begin on May 06 2024 – the 91st anniversary of the Nazi raid on the world’s first trans clinic. It’s the week they tried to erase Trans+ people. It’s the week we will remember.

It’s a week to build on and celebrate the work that the incredible Trans+ archivers, historians and content creators are already doing, launched after consultation and with support from some of the UK’s largest LGBTQIA+ organisations, trans trailblazers, elders and activists.

Trans+ History Week is a social enterprise to ensure its activity benefits the community and a QueerAF Launchpad project.

We will celebrate it with high-quality official content created by twenty Trans+ creatives, some of whom will get equipment for life so they can keep on telling our history forever and beyond.
