About August
August is a 36 year-old non-binary transmasculine person. Following 13 years as a secondary school teacher, they now work for The Clare Project, supporting TNBI people in Sussex. In their spare time they volunteer for Switchboard, the national LGBTQIA+ support line, and sing in The Fourth Choir, an LGBT+ chamber choir.
JOY IS…
Connection with the beautiful trans community of Brighton. Ballet dancing. Horses. Conducting. Singing in a queer choir. Learning about local history. Curating exhibitions.
Trans Joy means feeling at home in my body. Now I’ve had top surgery, I have begun to enjoy exercise for the first time. Coming to Misfits has helped me to make friends with my body as well as with other trans people.
In a world that often struggles to fully embrace diversity and inclusion, ‘Beyond the Binary – The Spectrum Of Trans Joy’ is a project dedicated to fostering social cohesion and visibility for the trans and intersex community. This fresh initiative from the award-winning queer photographer Chris Jepson seeks to empower and celebrate the trans+ community by showcasing authentic joy through a captivating series of individual and group portraits.
