Kicking off July and Brighton’s official Pride month (with Brighton Bear Weekend, Trans Pride Brighton and Brighton & Hove Pride, what else would you call it?), I am delighted to show a new installation of ‘Beyond The Binary – a celebration of trans joy’ at The Ledward Centre.
Under the new team of Billie and Ellie, The Ledward Centre is building community, celebrating diversity and creating change, and I am excited to be their first exhibition.
Comprising a series of panels in the windows that can be viewed from inside or out, there are 12 portraits of groups and individuals with accompanying text on display for the whole of July. Please do stop by and read the stories of these amazing people.
‘Beyond The Binary – A Celebration Of Trans Joy’ is a project by Proud Studios CIC and Brighton-based award-winning photographer and queer artist Chris Jepson.
Featuring trans groups including Trans Pride Brighton, The Clare Project, Trans Can Sport, TReNBI FC, Misfits and Transkaters, as well as numerous trans individuals, ‘Beyond the Binary’ captures authentic joy, promoting community spirit and empowering the trans community through visibility.
In a world that often struggles to fully embrace diversity and inclusion, right now the trans community is under attack from all sides, politically, legislatively and in the media, and trans hate crime has more than doubled in 5 years. This exhibition hopes to help counter the negative agenda and spread the pure joy of a community that wants to honour its rich history whilst celebrating its present and future. .
